Anatomy of Stale Roles (>35 Days): A High-Probability Pitch in B2B Recruitment

New roles are won on speed. Roles still open after five weeks are won on pain: they are at or past a typical time-to-fill, the first wave of applicants is long gone, and the hiring manager needs help.

Why day 35 matters

SHRM's 2026 benchmarking data puts the median time-to-fill at 39 calendar days for non-executive roles and 45 days for executive roles, measured from the day the requisition opens to the day the candidate accepts the offer [1]. The figures come from US employers, but they are a useful yardstick: a role still open on day 35–45 is at or past the point where it would normally be filled.

Inbound interest also fades fast. Ashby's analysis of about 13 million applications found that the first week of a job posting brings 2.5–3× more applications than any later week [2]. By week five, the internal team is working with what is left.

In the first two weeks, internal Talent Acquisition teams are usually confident. If an external headhunter calls on day 10 without a specific hook, the answer is often: "We're handling this internally." Five weeks later the conversation is different:

SIGNAL 01 // INBOUND HAS PEAKED
The first wave is gone

Applications peak in week one [2]. By week five the internal funnel has little new to offer.

SIGNAL 02 // PAST TYPICAL FILL TIME
The plan is slipping

The median role is filled in 39–45 days [1]. Past that, the team lead covers the gap and deadlines move.

SIGNAL 03 // ROOM FOR AN AGENCY
A reason to bring in help

A seat that has been empty for weeks gives the hiring manager a case for outside help, even where agencies are normally a last resort.

How TalentRadar flags stale roles

Many job boards show a fresh “posted” date when a listing is refreshed or reposted, which hides how long the role has really been open. TalentRadar records the date it first saw a role on the employer's own careers page and keeps it, so the age you see is the real one:

  • Stale roles on your Home screen: roles at your clients that have been open for more than 30–45 days are highlighted on Home, one click away from the filtered list in BD Master.
  • Go past the HR inbox: TalentRadar suggests the likely hiring manager for the role (for example VP Engineering or Head of Infrastructure) and opens a LinkedIn or Google X-Ray search for them in one click.
  • Lead with the bottleneck: mention how long the role has been open and attach two anonymised profiles from your niche that fit it.
